The Cruelest Equation

“One in a million” is how doctors described the genetic disease known as IPEX, but somehow, it infected two of Jasmine Latham’s three sons.

An acronym for immunodysregulation polyendocrinopathy enteropathy X-linked syndrome, only an estimated 100-200 cases of IPEX exist in the world. The disease effects only men, though women can be carriers.

An autoimmune disease identified only within the last dozen years, IPEX causes the body's immune system to attack its own tissues and organs.

The only known cure is a bone marrow transplant. After the decision to transplant Tre ended with her son’s death in 2013, Jasmine doesn’t know how she can make the same decision for his younger brother, Bryson, but without treatment, children with IPEX rarely live past their third birthday.
