What Makes Marines

The water towers on Parris Island, South Carolina, boast the slogan "We Make Marines" with good reason. Every United States marine recruited from east of the Mississippi in the last century was minted at the Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot.

As U.S. military enlistment has declined, the corps has sought new methods of drawing recruits.

As part of their recruiting efforts, they invite groups of high school teachers to participate in their Marine Corps Educators Workshop. Math and English teachers along with guidance counselors and coaches are brought to experience a 3-day simulation of parts of life as a recruit at the depot. The marketing initiative is meant to give teachers firsthand experience that will help guide their students who might be considering enlistment in the corps.

While on the island, they also see the lives of true Marine recruits firsthand.
